About SMS
The School of Mechanical Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar endeavors to be both globally competent and locally relevant. The School offers B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, Dual Degree (B.Tech- M.Tech), M.Tech. (Mechanical Systems Design, Thermal Science Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence) and Ph.D. program. The thrust areas of the School include Systems Design, Energy & Environment, Advanced Manufacturing, Autonomous Robotics, Agricultural Automation and Product Design. The faculty members of the School are also involved in basic research in their own areas of specialization while also coming together to blend their shared expertise in creating technologies, products and processes that will enrich both the national and local economy. The School sees its role in nation building via three important avenues of contribution: (i) building of human, (ii) knowledge and (iii) wealth capital through creation of comprehensive idea-to-industry cycle.
Message from the Head of School
Warm welcome to the School of Mechanical Sciences (SMS), IIT Bhubaneswar. Our school is a vibrant community of 30 dedicated faculty and 14 staff nurturing more than 600 B.Tech., Dual Degree, M.Tech., and Ph.D. students. Our Under Graduate(UG), Post Graduate(PG), and Ph.D. program blend rigorous fundamentals with hands-on innovation. Learning here goes well beyond the classroom. Our Advanced Manufacturing Lab houses laser-based and additive manufacturing systems. The CAD/CAM/CAE Lab offers 80 workstations loaded with tools such as ANSYS, SolidWorks, CATIA, and MATLAB. Students train on thermal and fluid facilities like subsonic wind tunnels and PIV systems, along with hands-on training on mechanical testing, vibration laboratories, and dedicated Machine & Mechanism. The students are also exposed to regular workshops, conferences, and invited talks that keep them plugged into current industry and research trends.
Our students continue to shine in placements. Our B.Tech. 2026 batch recorded 88.5% placement with an average CTC of ₹15.9 LPA and a highest offer of ₹56 LPA, while Dual Degree touched 85.2% placement. Leading recruiters like BEL, BPCL, HPCL, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Tata Power, L&T, Applied Materials, Maruti Suzuki, Zomato, and Accenture regularly return each year, which is a testament to the caliber of our graduates.
Every year, our faculty delivers excellent publications and sponsored research projects. Our faculty earn recognitions like the Director’s Commendation, INAE Young Engineer/Associate Awards, and Distinguished Teaching Awards, while our students bag the Dinesh Memorial and B.K. De Memorial Awards and Institute medals.
Innovation thrives here through startups like RanVox Tech. Pvt. Ltd., Vatodaya (AgriTech), Pranadonam R&D, and DeepHealth, and patented technologies in advanced bearing design. We warmly invite industry partners, prospective students, and collaborators to engage with us for placements, internships, sponsored research, or startup incubation as we shape the future of mechanical sciences together.

- Prof. Mihir Kumar Das received the Best Paper Award at the 16th International Conference on Thermal Engineering (ICTEA-2025).
- Prof. Mihir Kumar Das received the Best Paper Award at the 2nd International Conference on Thermo-Fluids and System Design (ICTFSD-2024).
- Dr. Pattabhi B. Ramaiah has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University Ranking) for year 2024 and 2025.
- Mr. K. Tewari (18ME02002) received the President’s Gold Medal for the highest CGPA among dual degree students (B.Tech + M.Tech, 2018–2023), along with the B.K. De Memorial, Dinesh Memorial, and Best Thesis Awards, for work on “Bionic Hybrid Cellular Structure”.
